Karen Maness: Summer Works
Showing through December 21, 2003
UT Performing Arts Center Bass Concert Hall 6th Floor Gallery
Opening Reception: Wednesday, October 29, 7-9 p.m.
AUSTIN, TX- The stillness of a hot Tuscan day, the light as it shaped the gesture of a statue and the quiet private reflections of the most inspiring environments await you upon the viewing of artist Karen Maness’ Summer Works exhibition showing now through December 21 at Bass Concert Hall 6th Floor Gallery.
Ms. Maness’ scenic art has set the stage for productions of Proof, The Dinosaur Within, and The Glass Menagerie at The State Theatre; and Abundance, Evita, Little Shop of Horrors, and Hair at the Zachary Scott Theatre. Austin Lyric Opera, the Rude Mechanicals, the University of Texas Department of Theatre and Dance, and many other organizations throughout Central Texas regularly call upon Ms. Maness’ scenic artistry.
Born in San Diego, California, Karen began formally studying fine art when she was eight years old. When she was fourteen years old, she created commissioned portraits and landscapes. At the age of sixteen, she apprenticed for theatre scene designers painting large backdrops and began her professional career as a scenic artist while studying art at Whittier College in Los Angeles, California. She has painted for nationally recognized theatres, theme parks, and industrial displays as well as for film and television.
Ms. Maness is currently the resident scenic artist at the University of Texas Performing Arts Center and an adjunct professor for the Department of Theatre and Dance. While in Austin she has continued her theatrical and classical training as an artist. She studied the painting of translucent backdrops at Cobalt Studios in New York and has just returned from her second summer at The Florence Academy of Art in Italy.

During the summers of 2001 and 2003, Karen studied landscape painting in the style of Macchiaiol (the Italian Impressionists), academic drawing, anatomy, and figure painting. Her most recent work is inspired by her travels in Europe and by her home in Austin, Texas. She hopes that Summer Works reflects her happiness while creating both for her own personal growth as an artist and in her theatrical development as a professional scenic artist. She states, “As I continue to develop my art, I perceive how integral the connection between my professional theatrical scenic art work is to the creation of my fine art work. Each informs the other.”

Her work is showing on the sixth floor of Bass Concert Hall during regularly scheduled season performances. For a private viewing during business hours, contact Holland Hopson in the Patron Services Office at 512.471.0611.
